History of Mohatta Palace
There is an interesting story behind its construction. The Palace is a tale of love just like the Taj Mahal in India, but a little bit different is that the Taj Mahal was built after the death of his wife while the Mohatta Palace was built to save a wife’s life. It was built by the Hindu Marwari entrepreneur, Shivratan Chandratan Mohatta in 1927. His wife was suffering from a fatal disease, according to the doctor’s instructions fresh sea air is good for her health. So Shivratan decided to build a palace on the seaside.
It was designed by Agha Ahmed Hussain which considered one of the best architects in the subcontinent. Shivratan Mohatta lived here for only twenty years, at the time of partition in 1947 he left Karachi for India. The government of Pakistan acquired the building for managing its foreign affairs.
1n 1964 the Palace was given to Muhtarma Fatima Jinnah and named Qasr-e-Fatima. When Fatima Jinnah dies it moved to her sister Shirin Bai, she stayed here till her death in 1980. After that, the palace was sealed. In 1995 the Government of Sindh purchased it and started its restoration work to turn it into a museum.
Museum opened for the public in 1999. There is a collection of maps, several sculptures, paintings, photos, and many amazing things. Many cultural exhibitions are held here. Queen Victoria statue also placed here. It is not allowed to bring their cell phones and camera to take pictures inside the museum.
