Its history dates back to when the British took over Punjab in 1849, After which the Hindus started occupying the Sikh Gurdwaras. In 1921 AD, Gurdwara was under the rule of Mahants. Mahants started desecrating Gurdwara with their immoral activities. So, on 20 February under the leadership of Lachman Singh Dharowali, a group of 150 to 200 Sikhs reached Gurdwara to restore its prestige through peaceful negotiations.

Mahants crossed all limits of barbarism and savagely murdered the Sikhs of this peaceful delegation with weapons. This attack is considered to be the second most horrible massacre in Sikh history after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Sardar Lachman Singh Dharowali was tied to a tree and he was set on fire after hanging on Jand Sahib. This great sacrifice played an important role in giving the management of Gurdwara back to Sikhs.
