Glorious Ramkot Fort | History of Ramkot Fort

Ramkot Fort is a great piece of nature that’s picturesquely located on the top of a hill, it feels as all the beauty of nature has gathered here. It looks like a striking Island, such a spectacular place in our country. The Ramkot Fort is one of the best tourist places near the River Jhelum in Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK). It’s an awesome, elegant, historical, and peaceful place strongly recommended for visit.

There is a short steep climb uphill with more than 300 stairs to reach the fort. Below the hilltop, you will find tables for sitting and plenty of greenery around the castle which present a beautiful landscape. Three sides of the fort are surrounded by the Jhelum River which falls into the huge reservoir of Mangla Dam. The view of the blue water from the fort is worth seeing. It looks like water is protecting it.

Due to its unique construction, it is a bit different from the rest. There is only one entrance to this fort. Other than that there is no gate to the fort from where you can enter. The fort has a strong fortified wall, several buildings, ramps, basements, and 2 pounds inside the fort, one of which was used for drinking water and the other for bathing.

The fossils of the fort remind us of its greatness. Standing on the top of the fort, all the surrounding views such as mountains, greenery, and blue water are truly amazing. In 1992 a museum was built by the Government of Pakistan. It contains paintings, models, and several specimens of rocks. The area is safe and attractive with its unique landscape.

Ramkot Fort is located in the Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir. The fort is placed beside Mangla dam, at the point where River Poonch and River Jehlum meets. Mangla Dam is one of the most famous dams in Pakistan.

It is accessible from two sides, one is from Saikh village Dadyal side and from other side you have to take a boat from the Water Sports Club on Mangla dam that will take you there in about 30 minutes. When Mangla Dam is full, the land route is closed. The fort is 85 km away from Mirpur Azad Kashmir.

History of Ramkot Fort

There are so many myths about the construction of Ramkot Fort. Some historians say that Ramkot Fort was constructed 900 years ago from a defensive point of view. It was built over the site of an ancient Hindu Shiva temple because Excavations at the fort have discovered the remains of a Hindu temple and relics from the 5th and the 9th centuries AD. But some believe that the Fort was constructed around the 16-17th century AD when Mughal emperor Akbar’s visit Kashmir to protect the area around old Mirpur.
