History of Gwadar

Gwadar was part of Oman and he ruled over it for many years. Pakistan’s interest in Gwadar began at that time when in 1954 the United States Geological Survey (USGS) conduct a survey of the coastal region and declared it’s a very suitable place as a port. After four years of Negotiations on 8 September 1958, Oman handed over Gwadar to Pakistan for 5.5 billion rupees.

On 1 July 1977 Gwadar was made a district of Balochistan province. Due to the importance of this place, the government of Pakistan decided to make it a port. In December 1995, the federal government approved the construction of the port. But due to a lack of funds, the project could not start.

After the official visit of the Chinese Prime Minister in 2001, an agreement was signed to build the first phase of the port so the work on it began in 2002. In 2007, the first part of the project was completed. It was inaugurated by General Musharraf.
